Synopsis: Morountodun is a story that follows Tubuti, our protagonist,  in the center of a rebellion against the corrupt agricultural system in Nigeria in 1960s.  It uses the power of morals to discuss the necessity of understanding the oppressed. The Play runs parallel to the ancient myth of Moremi, a legendary queen who infiltrated an enemy camp to secure victory for her people. This inspires our protagonist as she faces the questions of who to trust and how can peace be made?

Sustainble Design
*It was crucial to our team of Storytellers that the play is as sustainable as possible. We are committed to defining what stage design can look like with sustainability as a core value, especially within our CalArts community

Mood Boards

Guiding Design Questions:
  • How do you communicate the heat?
  • How do you express the culture?
  • How do you convey what is important and valuable to the characters?
  • How do I play with breaking the fourth wall and audience participation?
  • How do you make the set sustainable with the matrials in question?
  • What collaborations with the lighting designer and costume designers can we undertake to express the transformation that occurs?
  • How can we convey a myth using an older, more organic storytelling method?
